Together Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like conventional physical horror, but inside Together exists a intense contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their characters, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a methodically building fright fest, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he never makes Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that come with any relationship after ten years. Deep down, they still love one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
