The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a significant awards ceremony approaches, one notices a demand for the addition of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of fans with niche passions.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
