The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Unveil a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG Yet

The anticipation about the recent awards show was significant, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer packed with striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio clarified that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team might be designing a real-time experience instead of another turn-based title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it pioneered the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, player agency, and flexible progression—traits that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs only possible with a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously permissive, letting players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be completed in multiple ways, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can get ready for a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
