Approximately fifty cars have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.
Police report they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.
The liquid had been drawn in the pattern of a banned symbol, they added.
Officers then found many other vandalized automobiles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement say initial examinations show the liquid was likely human blood.
"There is still no indication as to its source; investigators are not yet aware of any injuries in relation with the incident," they stated.
Municipal representatives stated they were trying "to unravel the case" and have asked to the community for tips.
A high-ranking official stated the incident left him stunned and had to be solved rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the center of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on online, recalling the death of nine individuals by a gunman focusing on residents of foreign heritage in February 2020.
